Letter - School Aid
February 27, 2013

Dear

Recently our Governor presented his executive budget. In it he touted his increase to school aid of $ 889 million or a 4.4 % increase over last year. So how is it an increase when the school aid for in Hamilton County is cut almost $ 350,000 or 13.8%? With a 2% tax cap in place and now these further reductions in aid it is systematically bankrupting our schools. When we can spend millions buying more land to add to the state, it is criminal to reduce aid to any school inside the blue line. As a member of this community I realize the struggles the town, school and county leaders face creating budgets. To be fiscally conservative, and yet be responsive, to the communities needs, we need our schools as they are the "focal point" of our towns. Without them, there is no hope of attracting people to move and stay here. If the Governor is truly serious about New York State being a leader in education these funds not only need to be put back in the budget, they need to be increased.

It is time to get serious in Albany and do what is best for the taxpayers and the children of this state. Now is the time to look at unfunded mandates and flawed state aid formulas. The state touts the "Adirondacks" as being unique; it is time to start treating it that way.

Thank you,
